Why Small Businesses Can No Longer Ignore Reddit (And How to Start)
Intro
For years, digital marketing for small businesses meant a strict rotation of Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. But as feeds get crowded and traditional ads face increasing consumer skepticism, smart business owners are looking elsewhere.
Enter Reddit.
Reddit has evolved into a massive, high-intent search engine and community hub where real people look for honest advice, product recommendations, and peer reviews.
I’ve personally attended SEO training where the speaker spoke negatively about using Reddit, but newer statistics show that Reddit is gaining ground, showing up constantly in search results. The only con I can think of to using Reddit as a marketing source is that it requires a commitment of time to get ramped up (see the How-To Guide below). km
Some Reddit Stats for you
- Reddit has become one of the fastest-growing websites on the planet; with Google now prioritizing Reddit content in search results. As of Q2 of this year, Reddit has 130+ million daily active users, with almost 515 million weekly active users.
- Reddit ranked first for 13,872 keywords after Google’s May core update, up 54% from 8,993 in March. Gains were strongest in experience-led niches.
- ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI platforms often cite Reddit content, making it essential for AI search visibility. Perplexity frequently embeds Reddit threads in roughly 47% of general or commercial product-comparison answers, making Reddit content the dominant domain on the Perplexity platform.
- Reddit is all about human experiences, and their OPINIONS. Customer engagement is the new SEO. Direct product comparisons, and problem-solving answers drive the vast majority of citations.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves: Why Reddit Matters
If you are a small business owner trying to break through the digital noise, Reddit offers an untapped avenue to connect directly with your ideal prospects.
Reddit's explosive growth and unique user behavior make it a goldmine for brands willing to play by its rules:
- Massive Global Scale: Reddit boasts over 130 million daily active users globally, ranking consistently among the top visited websites on the internet.
- Unmatched Trust: Studies show that a vast majority of users view Reddit as a trusted platform for product discovery, with many ranking it higher than traditional search engines or other social networks for genuine recommendations.
- Pain Point Learning: Reddit is an IDEAL place to learn about pain points for your potential customers, giving you an incredible opportunity to pivot your marketing to provide solutions. Find your industry’s subreddit to start.
- High Purchase Intent: Reddit users are inherently proactive; they are significantly more likely to intentionally seek out product or service content rather than just passively scroll. This works for both widgets or services.
- The "Human" Factor: Research indicates that over 60% of Redditors feel brands that participate authentically in community comment threads feel significantly more human and trustworthy. Click here to see my blog article that talks about The Human Factor.
- The Power of Brand Strength: Machines measure authority through cross-platform presence and brand strength rather than isolated keyword manipulation.
The How-To Guide: Getting Started on Reddit as a Novice
Reddit has a notoriously strict culture. It hates overt self-promotion ("spam") but fiercely rewards genuine helpfulness. If you want to win prospects over, you need a strategy rooted in value.
Step 1: Lurk and Learn the Culture
Before starting, create your brand profile, but spend a week or two "lurking"; don’t mention your brand or service. This article explains this concept more fully, really fully!
- Find your subreddits: Use the search bar to find communities (subreddits) related to your industry, local area, or target audience (e.g., r/smallbusiness, r/skincareaddiction, or local city subreddits).
- Read the rules: Every subreddit has a strict set of community guidelines. Read the sidebar rules carefully—many ban self-promotion entirely or only allow it on specific days.
- Yes, it takes time. But the rewards will be well worth it.
Step 2: Establish Authenticity and Authority
Reddit rewards accounts that contribute value without strings attached. This is huge! I can’t stress enough how much this will elevate your brand!
- Answer questions related to your field of expertise for free.
- Share behind-the-scenes lessons, failures, or case studies from running your small business without dropping a link to your product.
- Build up "karma" (upvotes on your comments and posts), which proves to community moderators that you are a real contributor, not a bot or a fly-by-night marketer.
- Remember, providing thorough, well-thought out solutions to people’s issues could potentially get placed in a Google/Bing search result.
Step 3: Solve Problems, Don’t Pitch Products – Can't say this strongly enough!
When you spot a user asking a question that your product or service solves, resist the urge to drop a generic sales link.
- Write a thorough, helpful response addressing their problem directly.
- Only mention your business if it is a natural, seamless fit for the solution. Example: "We actually ran into this exact issue at my bakery, and we solved it by doing X... (If you want to check out how we set it up, my bio has a link)."
- It also happens that a Redditor will respond to you by asking YOU questions, and even ask you to respond with a link.
Step 4: Leverage Targeted Reddit Ads (Optional)
If you want to bypass the organic learning curve, Reddit’s native ad platform offers hyper-targeted options. You can target users based entirely on the specific subreddits they frequent (e.g., targeting people who browse r/photography if you sell camera straps). Reddit ads often feature significantly lower Cost-Per-Click (CPC) rates compared to Facebook or Instagram, making them budget-friendly for small businesses.
I’ve never used Reddit to place an ad and have no idea of the cost. But I truly feel that answering questions, helping Redditors find solutions (with occasional business name drops done as shown in Step 3 above), will go a long way to bringing your business to the forefront, and gaining ranking in searches.

Final Thoughts
Marketing on Reddit isn't about broadcasting a megaphone message—it's about joining a conversation. By trading corporate polish for genuine helpfulness, small businesses can turn Reddit communities into some of their most loyal customer bases.
I personally have become a Redditor. Many Google searches have led me there in the past, but now I frequently go straight to Reddit when looking for an answer. Depending on your question, it might take a couple of tries before you find the right subreddit.
